The most interesting part of all of this is that the gym isn’t opening a dialogue about what Gabby is talking about, they are just outraged that she called them racist.
There’s nothing more scary to white people than being called racist.
Why? Not because racism is disgusting and horrible, they just don’t want to be THOUGHT of as racist.
Never mind that Gabby gains NOTHING from calling her old gym racist. She finally opened up as to WHY she almost quit the sport, then subsequently moved to Iowa, away from her family and friends and support network, in order to train. All which makes a helluva lot more sense than her just uprooting herself so close to the 2012 Games.
People act like racism just doesn’t exist. Like no one, EVER, says horrible, mean, ugly, inhumane things and it is shocking that anyone would ever say anything bad, ever, to a black child trying to do her thing. SURPRISE!
Wake the fuck up.
Gabby opens herself to FURTHER scrutiny by even mentioning this and it is brave and honest and genuine to talk about it. That girl had to suffer through the Olympic Games with daily shade from the entire universe and managed to keep her head high and show everyone respect and kindness. Oh and win, too.
The sport of gymnastics is forever changed by her successes and she continues to be a true role model for anyone who loves the sport, practices and train in the sport, and is even a fan and ancillary viewer of the sport.
Gabby, we love you.
Remember POCs: anytime you speak out about racist things people do/say to you, there will always be someone calling you a liar.
What cracked me up was when one of them was all she lied! She didnt call names and dates!!!! And the owner is like she didnt say anything!!!! because she would feel SO comfortable doing that as the one African American girl at the gym. Sureeeee!!! And which one of them was like: Just because she is an Olympic winner doesn’t mean she has credibility?
Ahhhh:
Excalibur Gymnastics CEO Gustavo Maure said in a statement to E! News that Gabrielle is lying. “Is Gabrielle a credible person just because she is an Olympic champion? She is not giving any names or dates, leading us to believe that the accusation is fake,” he said. “This wouldn’t be the first time that the media has made up a story. Thousands of gymnasts and families have supported our good conduct and our professionalism during the last 30 years.”
I dont think I have ever heard that said about any Olympic Champion straight out like that.
In my view, the nasty, defensive, bone-headed response from Excalibur Gym is excellent confirmation of their racism.
Not only does Excalibur CEO Gustavo Moure launch an unprecedented attack on Gabrielle Douglas’s credibility in his press statement, he also goes after her mother, Natalie Hawkins: “If Gabby was suffering from bullying, why didn’t Mrs. Hawkins ever mention it while Gabby was training here or complain after she left Excalibur?” Um, hello, she didn’t confide in you because you’re clearly a racist prickhead and the enabler of the hostile environment in the first place, and she knew that this is exactly how you would respond: with hostility, anger, and denial.
Morgan Evans, a coach at Excalibur, said: “It’s just disrespectful to our name, to all the innocent people who were nice to her, who were respectful to her, and I just feel hurt.” Imagine that, a white lady pissed off at a young Black woman for being “disrespectful” and centering her hurt feelings over the reality that racism exists in her gym. She’s basically saying Gabrielle should be grateful that anybody was ever nice to her at all.
Any person of color who has trained in competitive sports in a white-dominated environment knows exactly what Gabrielle Douglas was talking about. It would be ludicrous to imagine that racist incidents didn’t occur.
All I can say at this point is, I’m so glad that Gabrielle Douglas made the move to train with Liang Chow, a Chinese American coach whose protege Shawn Johnson won Olympic gold in 2008, and with whom Gabrielle Douglas won two Olympic gold medals in London. How many gold medals do those nasty people at Excalibur Gym have? That’s what I thought.
I just find it bizarre that people act as if it’s shocking that racism still happens and it’s absolutely ludicrous to think Gabby might have experienced it while training…but then you go to the comments section of the article, and there’s more racism than you can shake a stick at. =\
I think it’s sad that the coaches would jump to defend all the precious little white children from the accusation of racism, while accusing Gabby of being a liar without a second thought. I guess only certain kinds of people deserve protection or sympathy?
